College History

Senthamil College, established in 1957 by the Madurai Tamil Sangam, is a distinguished institution dedicated to the promotion of Tamil language, literature, and higher education, particularly for economically disadvantaged students. The Sangam itself was founded on 14 September 1901 by the eminent philanthropist-scholar Pon Pandithurai Thevar of the Sethupathi lineage, known for his contributions to education, culture, and national causes, including financial support to freedom fighter V. O. Chidambaram Pillai.
Pandithurai Thevar belonged to a prominent family connected to Bhaskara Sethupathi, who sponsored Swami Vivekananda to represent Hinduism at the Chicago Parliament of Religions. Under Sethupathi patronage, the Sangam evolved into a major centre for Tamil scholarship, offering free boarding and lodging to Tamil students in its early years.
To disseminate research, the Sangam launched the monthly journal Senthamil on 7 December 1902, enriched by renowned scholars such as U. V. Swaminatha Iyer and others. It also conducts Tamil Sangath Thervu examinations for school students, awarding certificates and prizes to promote Tamil proficiency and cultural awareness.
Senthamil College was initially affiliated with the University of Madras (1957) and later with Madurai Kamaraj University. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission and accredited with an A grade by NAAC in 2024. The institution has expanded from Pre-University and Vidwan courses to comprehensive programmes including B.A. (since 1969), B.A. Literature (1976), M.A. (1979), M.Phil. (1986), and Ph.D. (since 2003), along with courses in Gandhian studies, manuscriptology, yoga, and computer applications.
Located in the heart of Madurai, the college provides a peaceful academic environment with essential infrastructure such as classrooms, seminar halls, and learning facilities. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes focused on Tamil studies, enriched through seminars, workshops, and literary activities.
The institution is supported by dedicated faculty engaged in teaching, research, and student guidance. Its library, with around 60,000 volumes, serves as a vital resource for advanced Tamil studies.
In addition to academics, the college emphasizes holistic development through co-curricular and extension activities that foster social responsibility, communication skills, and leadership. Over the years, it has produced numerous graduates, including hundreds of M.Phil. scholars and over 80 Ph.D. holders, contributing significantly to education, research, literature, and public service.
With a continued commitment to academic excellence, cultural preservation, and inclusive education, Senthamil College remains a vital institution in advancing Tamil scholarship and heritage.
